Major progress is being made on the Rennell road rehabilitation project, with the second phase of road compaction now underway following the arrival of a roller machine and additional operators and workers from Honiara.
The heavy-duty roller is currently being used to compact and strengthen the road section stretching from Lavagu to Bilaveia — an important corridor for communities in East Rennell.
In addition to the compaction works, the slabbing of the Lavagu Port access road has begun. This will provide a more stable and durable surface for vehicles transporting goods and passengers to and from the port.
Rehabilitation work has also officially commenced on the West Rennell road, which has long been in need of upgrades to ensure safer and more reliable transport for residents.
Constituency Development Officer (CDO) Stuart Baiabe said the project marks an important milestone for the island’s connectivity and local development.
“The arrival of the roller machine from Honiara is a big boost for us,” Mr Baiabe said. “It allows us to move into the second phase of compacting, which is crucial for strengthening the road foundation.”
He added that the slabbing of the Lavagu Port access road is another key component:
“Putting in concrete slabs means fewer disruptions during bad weather and fewer maintenance problems down the line.”
Regarding the West Rennell road, Mr Baiabe noted:
“Communities in West Rennell have waited a long time for this. The work that has now started will make travel safer for students, families, and businesses alike.”
Mr. Baiabe said the constituency office will continue to work closely with local communities to keep the project on track.
“We ask everyone for their patience and support as this work continues. Good roads are a foundation for better services and more opportunities for our people.”
